Linux for Engineers
Just mention the Blue Screen of Death or computer virus and some may dive under the nearest table. Thankfully, there have been improvements to Windows and CAD but many still wish for another alternative. That alternative was introduced in 1991 when Linus Torvalds created the first version of Linux. Twenty years later there is a vast array of Linux software, much being absolutely free.
Some Linux CAD software has been produced in prior years but none was able to compete with AutoCad. CAD users demanded full compatability of file type and commands. AutoCad and Microstation have not yet been challenged but something interesting has happened in the AutoCad LT market.
CivilWorld Downloads
The most popular feature at CivilWorld is our downloads section. When we first started civilworld over 20 years ago, downloads were simple. Now there are many versions of Windows as well as Linux. There is cross platform software that runs on any system and windows software that runs on Linux using WINE, the windows emulator.
Some sites are based on the idea that the only operating system is Windows 7. At CivilWorld we believe that engineers and designers should consider all possible alternatives. Windows, Linux, DOS and cross platform software is available here. We even have an archive section for the really old software that some might just still be using. Since Apple does not encourage the free distribution of compatable software, we will abide by their wishes and not distribute any software for Mac.
Design Basics
Even experienced engineers and designers sometimes find themselves in a situation where they must learn a new skill. The Design Basics section at CivilWorld will get you up and going on various types of design tasks. If you don't know where to get started, turn to CivilWorld Design Basics.
